I heard Taps played the other day, got me to thinking of my uncle. He is one of the idols on my page. When down I tend to write, some how helps. These are for my Uncle Bill.
I grew up in the sandhills
Had to work for my keep
Along side my uncle
He was a hero to me
He had one leg
That was just a stump
Was funny to watch
Stumbling around when drunk
That old man could drink
And damm could he fight
Went to town on the weekend
Dad'd bail him out Sunday night
We'd ride the range
Fix fence and such
Brand and dehorn
Cut out calf’s nuts
Put up hay all summer
To feed them damm cows
Kill rattle snakes an coyotes
Ones we could anyhow
Calf'n time come around
We might be up all night
Pull'n the slippery lil bastards
Make'n sure they were alright
Taught me how to shoot
Throw fence staples like a knife
Taught me lots of things
Helped me get through this life
I grew sick of that ranch
First chance I moved away
Ain't never went back
That’s the way it'll stay
Went the funeral
When my uncle died
They played taps
And yes I cried
A vet, an alcoholic
A cowboy, a drunk
A fighter, a squaw humper
A bottle hid in his bunk
I’ll never forget him
I loved that man
My uncle Bill………..

-- ----- ---- --- ----
Driving around Sunday morning
Looking for trouble to get in
See an old man on the sidewalk
Waiting for bar to open so he can go in
He was tall and lanky
Maybe a little to thin
Big hands scarred and misshapen
From the fights he’d been in
Had holes in his elbows
Patches on his jeans
Boots old and rundown
At least he looked clean
Smoking a home rolled
Whiskers on his chin
Must a had a hard night
Form the shape he was in
His teeth rough and ragged
The few that were there
When people walked by
Some would frown some would stare
As I came by I honked
I called out a dirty word
He turned around looked and saw me
Grinned and gave me the bird
To most he was just an old drunk
On his regular weekend spree
He was my uncle
A hero to me
If you see an old timer
Clean or with matted dirty hair
You don’t know what they been though
You sure weren’t there
Give them some love
Your respect they most likely earned
Be a smile or a few dollars
For the life that they’ve burned
Might spend it on food
But most likely wine
Be happy for them
They earned a good time..

Out in the dark night I look up above
Moon so beautiful I think about love
How grand it would be if you could just see
The sight above and be standing here with me
My arm around you an your soft hand in mine
I'd be just like heaven at least in my mind
But miles apart each other we may never see
So I look at he moon and dream of what could be
curt
Hear the wail of a million demons
Late night an angels are scream'n
Night so black can't see'm come'n
hear'm march'n to the devils drum'n
Angel's army try'n to respond
No time left waited to long
flash'a fire hell opens the gate
ya want'a pray but its way to late
temperature sores even ocean’s steam'n
firestorm an now you can see'm
60000 wide they keep a come'n
keep'n in step with the evil drum'n
earth a shake'n from all the pound'n
ya have hope ya see the angels come'n
Angels battle no chance to win
world's lived much to long in sin
army's meet angle's cut down
nothing left but a bloody ground
love's dead our souls a die'n
devil laughs n god's he's cry'n
god lost n he's left alone
no souls left he can call home
no souls left he can call home

The Devil came calling
On a dark cold night
We sat and there and talked
In the campfires flickering light
The air had a chill
Like I’d had never felt before
Cause the Devil came calling
To settle up the score
He knows me well
All bad things I’d done
How I’m a friend of old Death
An not much like anyone
Said boy your times near
Best change your ways
Next time I come calling
Will be the end of your days
Not a visit like last time
You came down to me
You’ll stay there forever
All though eternity
Been there just one time
Only insane can go an stand the pain
Cold on the inside as fire sears your skin
Absence of love with nothing left to gain
Moving like a panther
He gets up to go
Stops in the shadows
Looked back to make sure I know
My spine turns to ice
Set shivering in fear
Sweat burns my eyes
The Devil is here
The camp fire erupts
Flames fill the sky
Hell’s on earth this night
Can only scream or cry
He leaves as he came
Stars return to the sky
Cool breeze clears the air
I’m not ready to die
I throw logs on the fire
Pull my old hat down tight
I thank our dear Load
I made it through this night
When the Devil comes calling
He’s about got your soul
Get on them knees an pray
Pray you don’t go
curt
I see a line of cars and their all painted black
I see flowers and smell the smell of fresh turned earth
I see the hot sun shine down on a small over dressed crowd
I see sweat mix with tears from sad eyes
I see the lid come down and then I"m alone
I see the darkness
I see nothing
I feel a rumble
I feel the earth ripped apart
I feel the evil in this place
I feel the devil's hot breath on my face
I feel so cold inside
I feel searing flesh
I feel all love is no more
I feel forever
curt
Listen to the Night Hawk
Dive in the evening sky
The howl of a lonesome coyote
Such a mournful cry
Water running down a stream
Fighting rocks to get by
Ever looked up to the moon
Ever asked it why
Together Alone
Life is just surviving
Such a sad sad way to be
Alone Together
Together Alone
Wind rustles through the trees
Grass waving at my feet
Cloud drifts across the moon
The darkness happily I meet
Walking down a lonesome trail
Through the trees I see the sky
Happy for the darkness
No one can see me cry
Together Alone
Life is just surviving
Such a sad sad way to be
Alone Together
Together Alone
In love but not loving
A friend but not a mate
Married without a wife
Stuck with my sad fate
Trapped in my life
Wnata be wild and free
Just go on living
Feeling sorry for me
